Minus 9 to 5 is a collective impact initiative incubated by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, one of the oldest and largest philanthropic organizations in Virginia. The community foundation spent a year exploring its region’s greatest needs and engaged FSG, an international expert in collective impact, to conduct 100 interviews with parents and professionals interested in early care and education.
This exploration led to the initiative’s launch in 2015 to:
- Address the complex needs of young children and their families.
- Coordinate the abundance of child and family resources and programs in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach.
- Help all expectant parents or families with young children gain access to high-quality programs and services.
Central to our work is a community-focused approach that unites more than 100 advocates. These children’s champions include parents, childcare providers, educators, healthcare professionals, nonprofit leaders and government officials. They identify and implement solutions in order to build a strong system that promotes the success of all area children and families.
